Spotlight: Old First Ward

The Old First Ward is an epicenter of Buffalo's industrial history. It also boasts a prime waterfront location, convenience to Downtown, and a mixture of fun new bars and cafes and old neighborhood mainstays. It's also super affordable - a great option for a first-time buyer.

Some things to do in the First Ward:

Kayak Elevator Alley: There is a great kayak launch at the end of Hamburg Street that gets you right into Elevator Alley - a stunning array of grain elevators. Rent a kayak or bring your own!

Mutual Riverfront Park: Perfect place to sit and soak in the best of Buffalo's past and future. Just watch out for geese.

Mazurek's Bakery: This bakery is a neighborhood institution - it has been in operation since 1933. Stop by for pazcki, a donut, or a pastry heart.

Gene McCarthy's: Go on a Tuesday. Order the McCarthy's-style chicken fingers. Have a locally brewed beer. Play trivia.

Undergrounds Cafe: This cafe used to be a funeral home (get it? Undergrounds?). It has a great sandwich menu, awesome decor, and a perfect patio for summer weather.

The Barrel Factory: A fantastic event space (planning a wedding anytime soon?) featuring a distillery and brewery.

Housing in the First Ward:

Primarily, you will find smaller, single-family homes reminiscent of the neighborhood's working class roots. Many are quite inexpensive but in need of extensive repairs and updates. However, along the river you will also find some newer, luxury apartments (for rent), like those at Buffalo River Landing.
